Captain Timmy & the Bobbing Barrel: The Giant Illustrated Storybook Exhibition!
06-29 February 2024

Cascade Gallery, Waterside Theatre

At the end of January 2024 author and storyteller, Robert Campbell, and award winning illustrator and animator, Grace Fairley, visited four local primary schools - Artigarvan Primary School, Donemana Ps, Cumber Claudy Primary School and the Model Primary and Nursery School - to facilitate an exciting and unique activity package, exploring Robert Campbell’s book, 'Captain Timmy & the Bobbing Barrel'.
During these visits, students enjoyed an interactive storytelling session with Robert Campbell hearing all about Captain Timmy’s eventful journey to Portrush on the Bobbing Barrel ship, before working with Grace Fairley to illustrate their own visual interpretations of the story using the digital design software, Procreate.
The works created by the students during these workshops will be displayed on the walls of Cascade Gallery in the Waterside Theatre from 6th-29th February, transforming the space into a giant illustrated storybook version of Captain Timmy & the Bobbing Barrel!
The exhibition will open to the public on Tuesday 6th February at 4pm and will run until February 29th. The Waterside Theatre would like to invite all students involved in the project and their families, friends and teachers to come along to the theatre on Tuesday from 4-5:30pm to celebrate their talents and to open the exhibition.

This project is part of the ‘Spread The Word’ Literary Festival - a multi-disciplinary, multi-platform, multi-age, cross-community literary festival that will highlight the importance of reading, writing and literature which will run from 6th-11th February in the Waterside Theatre and in a number of partner venues, including Little Acorns Bookstore, Void Art Centre, Offing Coffee, Strabane & Derry Central Libraries, The Hidden City Cafe and local schools.

With thanks to: our funders, Derry City & Strabane District Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland; and to Void Art Centre, Nerve Centre and Studio 2 for lending us your iPads!
