Be inspired by the languages which surround us! Professor Niall Comer & Dr. Frank Ferguson begin this session with a fascinating discussion on Irish and Ulster-Scots writing, and then local writers will share selections of their poetry and prose.

Dr Frank Ferguson is Research Director for English Language and Literature at Ulster University. He has considerable experience in the successful management and delivery of Ulster-Scots and Irish literary, historical and cultural and teaching projects. A researcher with over twenty years experience, he has authored many articles and was editor of the seminal Ulster-Scots Writing an Anthology, and co-editor and contributor to Revising Robert Burns and Ulster: Literature, Religion and Politics c. 1770–1920 (Four Courts Press). He has project managed a series of government and Research Council-funded initiatives in the last ten years.


Dr. Niall Comer is a lecturer in Irish Language in Ulster University, specializing in Modern Irish and Translation. His main area of research is place-names study. He has published and lectured widely on the subject, in particular concerning the place-name tradition of the Causeway Coast and Glens. A native of Newry, he has been living in Glenullin, north Derry, for over 20 years.
